Evening Lecture: Design of Baha’i Temple, Santiago, Chile
Opened in September 2016, the Baha’i Temple north of Santiago, Chile, is the eighth and final continental “mother temple” of the Baha’i faith. The vision of architect Siamak Hariri of Hariri Pontarini Architects, Toronto, was to create an inspirational “temple of light”. As a member of the design team, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger was structural engineering and cladding consultant.
Achieving Hariri’s vision posed many challenges. The project is located in a high seismic zone in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. The exterior cladding uses custom slumped borosilicate glass panels developed specifically for this project. The combination of new materials in a high seismic environment required advanced performance-based design, seismic base isolation, extensive computer simulation of structural reliability, and comprehensive testing in SGH’s laboratories to characterize the performance and durability of the novel materials.
The Temple has won numerous awards for architecture and engineering including the Institution of Structural Engineers Award for Structural Artistry in 2017.

Evening Lecture: Design and Construction of the Northern Spire Bridge Sunderland
A joint lecture arranged by Engineers Ireland and the RoI Branch of the IStructE
The Northern Spire is a landmark new bridge dominating Sunderland’s skyline, which opened in August 2018. It is central to a new strategic road linking the A19 to Sunderland city centre and Port of Sunderland, United Kingdom. The innovative project has raised the profile of civil engineering both in the UK and internationally. The 105m A-frame pylon was transported by sea and river to site, before being raised into position during a carefully orchestrated two-day operation. The 330m deck was built alongside and launched across the river. It has been commissioned and overseen by Sunderland City Council. The £117 million project was funded by the UK Government and Sunderland City Council. In May 2015, the Council awarded the main construction contract to FVB, an international joint venture set up by Farrans Construction and Victor Buyck Steel Construction and the Design Joint Venture of Roughan & O’Donovan Consulting Engineers and BuroHappold Engineering.

Evening Lecture – Maintenance of the Forth Road Bridge
When opened in 1964, the Forth Road Bridge (FRB), with a main span of 1006m, was the 4th longest in the world and was the 1st long span bridge to be built outside the US. Having recently celebrated its 50th anniversary the FRB now transports over 25 million vehicles per year and is a vital link in Scotland’s strategic road network. However, the operation and maintenance costs of large cable supported bridges such as the FRB are often underestimated by those funding their initial construction. It would also appear that new design and construction of large cable supported bridges are still undertaken without much reference to those who have the experience of maintaining and operating them. This presentation will delve into these topics and describe the maintenance works carried out on the FRB over the past 15 years so as to ensure structural integrity for its remaining service life.
Presented by: Barry Colford Chief Engineer & Bridgemaster, Forth Road Bridge
Barry is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Barry is author of a number of technical papers on bridge engineering and is a European Committee member of the International Cable Supported Bridge Operators Association. He represents the Long Span Bridges Group on the UK Bridges Board and Bridge Owners Forum. He is involved with both Edinburgh University and Edinburgh Napier University in their MEng and MSc courses. He is the Chief Engineer and Bridgemaster of the Forth Road Bridge.
