Winter Lecture Series – Daly’s (Shaky) Bridge, Cork

Date: Tuesday 13th January 2015

Time: 19:00 (Tea/Coffee from 18:30)

Venue: Room G10, Civil and Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering, University College Cork

Daly’s Bridge is a historic steel suspension footbridge in Ireland, known locally as the ‘Shaky Bridge’ for its noticeable movement under pedestrian loading. Daly’s bridge has been instrumented and tested recently for static and dynamic responses and a model of the bridge has been established in the process. The talk will focus on this modelling and testing. Video analysis and a new signal processing technique have been successfully applied to this bridge to identify its natural frequency. The study highlights the complexity and importance of full scale testing with good models and signal processing techniques for pedestrian bridge structures.

The lecture will be given by Dr Vikram Pakrashi. Vikram is a Chartered Engineer with Engineers Ireland and a Lecturer in Structural Engineering in University College Cork, Ireland. He is the director of Dynamical Systems and Risk Laboratory, Civil and Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering, University College Cork. Vikram’s research interests include dynamics of structures and infrastructure maintenance management. Vikram is the Head of Learning of Engineers Without Borders: Ireland and is the founding member of its UCC chapter. Before joining UCC, he has served the industry mainly in the bridge engineering sector.
