Student Prize 2013 – Tuesday, 8 October 2013


On Tuesday, 8th October 2013, the Republic of Ireland Regional Group of the IStructE will host its annual Student Prize competition evening, in Room 259, DIT Bolton St. A reception will take place at 18:00 followed by presentations from the nominees at 18:30. Each nominee will make a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation on their project. Each presentation will be followed by questions from three industry-representative judges, after which some questions shall be invited from the floor.

This years nominees are:

  • CIT: James Barry – “Stressing Geometry Control of Cable Stayed Bridges”
  • DIT: Aaron Condren – “The Effect of Pylon Sway on Cable Vibrations in Cable Stayed Bridges”
  • NUIG: Peter Berrill & Paul Moran – “Environmental Life Cycle Assessment of a University Building in Ireland”
  • TCD: Daniel O’Brien – “Analysis of the Earthquake Response of Steel Structures using OpenSees” 
  • UCC: Cian Long & Patrick O’Kelly-Lynch – “The Structural Design Implications of Attaching a Point Absorber to a Wind Turbine Monopile”
  • UCD (BEng): Evan Brennan & Eoin Dunleavy – “Hybrid Foundation Analysis for Offshore Wind Turbines”
  • UCD (Struct. Eng. & Arch): Brian Kealy – “An Investigation into Finite Element Testing of Hybrid Gravity Base Foundations for Offshore Wind Turbine Use”

The Regional Group would like to congratulate all of the students on their nomination and is looking forward to hearing their presentations. The evening promises to be highly informative for both industry practitioners and students.
