Graduate Evening 2010

The Republic of Ireland Branch’s Graduate Evening offers engineering students a chance to learn more about the various career paths available to them following graduation. A number of recent graduates will make presentations detailing their personal experiences, and then answer questions from the audience. This is an informative event and will be of particular benefit to final-year students.

This year the speakers are:

  • Niall O’Briain BE (Hons) – Niall graduated from University College Dublin in 2009 with a degree in Civil Engineering. As part of his degree Niall spent a year studying at the University of Melbourne Australia. Since graduating he has worked with O’Connor Sutton Cronin Consulting Engineers, and is currently based in their London office.
  • Joe Keogh BE (Hons) MSc – Joe graduated from Athlone Institute of Technology in 2008. He went on to complete a Masters in Environmental Engineering in Queens University, Belfast, and is now reading for a PhD on Pedestrian bridges in Dublin Institute of Technology.
  • Coman Doyle BA BAI (Hons) – Coman graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, in 2008 and and has been working with Arup Consulting Engineers since, as a Design Engineer.
  • Mick Kelly BE (Hons) – Mick graduated from University College Dublin with a Degree in Civil Engineering in 2003. As part of the third year of his Degree, Mick completed 6 months’ work experience with SIAC. In October 2003 he commenced full-time employment with SIAC Construction where he has been mainly involved with Motorway and Civil Engineering projects.

Meeting with ISCARSAH

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Symposium ‘Changing World, Changing Views of Heritage: The Impact of Global Change on Cultural Heritage’ will be held in Dublin from the 26th to the 31st October. As part of this event the ICOMOS Advisory Council and its various International Scientific Committees (ISCs) are holding their annual meetings. ICOMOS has requested that a special meeting is held between the International Scientific Committee on the Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritage (ISCARSAH), the committee mainly concerned with conservation engineering, and Engineers Ireland. This meeting has been scheduled for 6:00 pm, on Tuesday, 26th October.

This is the first time that an ISC has met with a counter-body in the host country. Both members and individuals interested in conservation are invited to attend what promises to be an interesting meeting.

EC2 One-day Tutorial Workshop

Following on from the popularity and success of the recent Eurocodes’ Evening Course, the IStructE, in conjunction with the ACEI and the Irish Concrete Society, are holding a 1-day tutorial workshop on Concrete Design to EC2.

This one-day course is aimed at practising consulting engineers with experience in concrete design. The tutorial will be limited to a small group and will involve interactive design sessions following examples in accordance with the Irish National Annex & EC2. A set of worked examples will be provided to participants.

Participants will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of the Concrete Society publication ‘Concise Eurocode 2’ at a substantially discounted rate.

Lunch will be provided.

The Course is CPD accredited and a certificate of attendance will be awarded.

The presenters are:
Mr Charles Goodchild, BSc CEng MCIOB MIStructE
Principal Structural Engineer with MPA -The Concrete Centre Currently working on the implementation of Eurocode 2 in the UK.
Mr Robin Whittle, MA(Cantab), CEng, MICE
Involved with the development of UK and European Codes for the use of structural concrete. Mr Whittle, an Arup consultant, is part of the Project Team which drafted Eurocode 2.
Mr Jim Mansfield, RConsEI, CEng, BE, FIEI, MIStructE
National Liaison Engineer representing Ireland and actively involved in the implementation of EC2 and EC6.

The course will be held in DIT Bolton Street, 9:00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m, Wednesday 27 October 2010.
