Engineers Ireland Evening Lecture: Deep Excavations – Measuring the Stiffness of the Ground

During the early days of geotechnical engineering the focus was on preventing failures. This was largely achieved by the 1970s. The subsequent growth of cities, with concentrated construction, deep excavation, tunnelling, services etc. has meant that increasingly engineers need to predict deformations around new construction.

On Wednesday 27 April the Annual Guest Lecture by the Geotechnical Society of Ireland will address this topic. Bringing together data from real sites, and placing it in the framework of elasticity, Professor Chris Clayton (University of Southampton) will review what is required, how stiffness parameters can be obtained and what further development is needed in this area.
