The Institution in Cork (No. 4 Nov-97)

Over the past 4 to 5 years there has been a concerted attempt to raise the profile of the Institution in the southern capital and the surrounding region. This has involved running an annual lecture in conjunction with the Cork Region of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland. In addition, courses have been conducted at the Cork Regional Technical College in preparation for the Associate Membership and Chartered Membership (Part 3) Examinations of The Institution. The establishment of these courses has resulted in the RTC being designated as an Examination Centre. This has proved of great advantage to those in the region who have been taking the examinations. A Review of Structural Steelwork (No. 4 Nov-97)

A review of Structural Steelwork by Frixos Joanides, Alan Weller and John Gwynn

For this, the latest in his series on structural steelwork, Frixos Joannides has again teamed up with Alan Weller and, this time, John Gwynn to produce a textbook which addresses the needs of student and designer alike. The result is a revised publication, in which the BS 5950-based material of the previous edition has been amended to follow the format and provisions of Eurocode 3. In a much-expanded volume, introductory chapters on structural materials, loads and partial safety factors are followed by material on member design (flexural, compression and tension members), welded and bolted connections and frame design (trusses, portal frames and multi-storey frames). For each of these, an explanation of the relevant principles of structural design is followed by a description of the code provisions and illustration through fully worked examples. Replacement Of Wexford Bridge (No. 4 Nov-97)

The 383m long Wexford Bridge has been replaced by a new superstructure during a 10-week road closure period, commencing on the 15th September 1997.

The original seven span prestressed concrete balanced cantilever bridge showed excessive chloride ion content in the concrete resulting in serious corrosion of reinforcement and prestressing anchors together with lamination and spalling throughout the bridge.

New Professor At University College Galway (No. 4 Nov-97)

Prof. Paraic O'Donoghue

Prof. Padraic O'Donoghue

University College Galway has announced the appointment of Padraic O’Donoghue as Professor of Civil Engineering in succession to Professor Declan O’Keeffe. Professor O’Donoghue joins UCG from University College Dublin where he was a Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering for the past seven years.
